Hope everyone is enjoying the first weekend of a very important month. The rain has cleared and the sun even decided to make an appearance! Not only is the gorgeous weather an opportunity to step foot outside and breathe in the fresh air, but it is also perfect for a day at the farmer’s market. Eating locally is not only great for the community, but great for the body as well. Fruits and vegetables found at the farmer’s market are usually sold within 24 hours of when they were harvested. The produce is fresher, tastier, and more nutritious than the produce found at a grocery store. Fresh produce quickly loses nutrients so eating produce in season and at the peak of its ripeness is best!
Some vegetables in season now include:
Artichokes, Asparagus,Beets, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chives, Parsnips, Radishes, Spinach, and many more!
Some fruits include:
Grapefruit, Lemons, Oranges, Mandarins, and Strawberries
Speaking from personal experience, the local Berkeley Farmer’s Market is a wonderful escape from the dungeons of Moffitt and Main Stacks. There is a variety of fresh produce and the numerous free samples don’t hurt either 😉
