Spotlight of the Week: 14 Health Tips for 2014 from AND

Whether we are busy with school or work, we should always pay attention to the quality of our diet.
March is National Nutrition Month® and the theme for this year is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.”
  • Next time you eat, take a look at you plate and see if your meal contains the right components included in the MyPlate model. Remember to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables in addition to whole grains and lean meats.
  • I know that sometimes it can be difficult to eat healthy when dining out, so I recommend cooking at home whenever possible. This month make some time for yourself and try cooking a few healthy recipes at home. Lots of easy to make recipes can be found on eatright.org and choosemyplate.gov. For example, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) has many videos that teach you various cooking techniques.
  • More advice on how to “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right” can be found in the 14 Health Tips for 2014. I think tip #1 is very important because breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It only takes a few minutes to make a bowl of oatmeal or grab a banana on your way out of the house. If you really don’t have time for make food in the morning, you can always prepare something the night before. After all what better to start your day than a nutritious breakfast!!!
